Background

Construction of a 15,000ft² iconic leisure building as part of the council’s extensive regeneration proposals for Barking.

Our Role

Stace were appointed in a Cost Management capacity.

Our Impact

The project included feasibility into a number of site locations for the new Leisure Centre.

The site chosen for the new centre was extremely small and located in the centre of Barking adjacent to the Town Hall, surrounded on all sides by existing highways and public buildings. The site is also located close to the boundary of the Abbey and Barking Town Centre Conservation Area. The building was thus designed to be both economic in space and sensitive to the adjacent Historical Abbey site, the Abbey Green and Grade I listed St Margarette’s Church.

The scope of works included site clearance and demolition of an existing public house and vacant residential properties, together with public utility service divisions. The brief also required that the existing adjacent Abbey Sports Centre must be kept open to the public until the new centre opened.

This iconic Leisure Centre now includes a six lane competition swimming pool, a Learner Pool, Café, external seating, a 120 station gym, aerobics and spin studios, a Health Spa, children’s play area and numerous administration and ancillary spaces.
