Background

Ensuring London’s first purpose-built creative district adheres to the highest health, safety and environmental standards.

The Design District consists of 16 buildings designed by eight pioneering Architects. Fifteen of the uniquely designed buildings are intended to provide an affordable home for independent businesses working within creative industries. A food market will add further vibrancy to the car-free site which is located next to the O2 on the Greenwich Peninsula

Various types of construction have been used in the Design District, utilising both traditional and modern methods of construction, these range from reinforced concrete frame, steel frame, cross laminated timber and lightweight steel frame with ETFE covering.

The project has required the coordination of various designers, some of which are based in Europe as well as the UK. We have liaised particularly closely with the European-based designers to ensure that they are fully compliant with the UK CDM Regulations.  Each building presented varying access and maintenance challenges which we overcame to ensure that a realistic maintenance strategy is in place which does not adversely affect one another.

The Design District forms part of the larger mixed-use redevelopment of Greenwich Peninsula being undertaken by Knight Dragon. This regeneration project, for which we are acting as Client H&S Advisor and Principal Designer, will provide over 15,000 homes, 13,000 new jobs and 48 acres of open public space over the coming years, find out more here.
