The Exeter Deaf Academy

Before the redevelopment commenced, a demolition contractor was engaged to demolish the majority of buildings on the western portion of the Rolle Campus site, which previously formed part of Plymouth University. The demolition and enabling works were completed in March 2018. The main works commenced in February 2019.
The main contract involves the development of a new Academy building and a separate standalone student accommodation building. The building will provide teaching facilities for 80 students and provide accommodation facilities for 50% of its students.
An existing building will be stripped out and refurbished to form part of the Academy’s new home. The Owen Building will form a hub for the Academy’s administration, finance and fundraising departments.
The school will relocate from their existing Topsham Road site in Exeter to the Exmouth facility in April 2020.
During the design phases, the emphasis was placed on designing a facility that would accommodate those who are deaf or hearing impaired, with an aspiration to provide a flagship Academy and teaching facility, providing a benchmark for future projects of a similar nature.
The new academy will deliver the environment to inspire and enhance the learning for the students.
