Our Role

Stace provided Contract Administration and Cost Management services.

Our Impact

Works were completed in two phases to ensure the smooth running of the school and entailed the refurbishment of all four houses, in order to bring the external and internal décor and services up to date. This included the complete the overhaul of roofs, redecoration of external joinery, the cleaning and decoration of external rendered and brickwork elevations, the refit of all dormitories (featuring over 200 bedrooms) and the renovation of the common areas, providing new areas for interactive learning, media studies and private study.

The boarding houses were built in 1898 and are arranged in two pairs with a central courtyard providing the main entrance to the school. Stace formulated a survey strategy to minimise disruption to the occupation of the school, and arranged for specialist access equipment to provide access to undertake a detailed inspection of all external surfaces.

The team also undertook detailed surveys of the elevations in order to identify the disrepair present, prioritise repairs and to specify the method of remediation, in order to assist the school in formulating a long term maintenance and capital expenditure programme. The report took into consideration the proposed replacement of the existing mixture of windows with steel conservation types which closely match the originals, as well as any planned repairs to the stonework, brickwork and applied render wall finish. English Heritage was consulted throughout the build, in order to ensure no external works impacted the historical importance of the site.
