Today is World Day for Safety and Health at Work

Since 2003 the United Nations have been promoting the annual ‘World Day for Safety and Health at Work’, highlighting the importance of preventing accidents and diseases to staff while at work. Here is a comparison of the accident and illness statistics for the 2019/20 and 2020/21:

• 441,000 workers sustained non-fatal injuries in 2020/21 compared with 693,000 in 2019/20.
• 850,000 workers suffering from a new case of work-related ill health in 2020/21 compared to 638,000 in 2019/20.
• 142 workers killed at work in 2020/21 compared with 111 in 2019/20. But this compares very well to the figures for 2002/03 which was 226.

*Statistics from the HSE’s yearly summary statistics for Great Britain.

The Industry has come a long way since 2003, but these figures show we have still more to do, and to do this, we need cooperation from both employers and employees; we’ve shown how well we can do this when dealing with the Coronavirus pandemic!

Let’s continue this cooperation and improve health and safety at work for all.
