Green light for Southampton’s Bargate Quarter

  • Developer, Tellon Capital, has been granted planning consent for their Bargate Quarter scheme.
  • The creative and sustainable scheme reflects the new way in which people live, work, shop, and socialise.
  • 519 residential units and 2,515 square metres of retail will be delivered.
  • Stace LLP is appointed as both project manager and employer’s agent, overseeing the design & construction stages.

Developer, Tellon Capital, has secured planning consent for their Bargate Quarter scheme.

Set on a unique 900-year old heritage site, Bargate Quarter will reconnect the city of Southampton and create a place where people can truly explore, enjoy, live and learn.

Responding to the impact of Covid-19, Tellon Capital revised the original plans which had been approved in late 2019 and which includes the now-demolished Bargate Shopping Centre. It will deliver 519 residential units and approximately 2,515 square metres of retail, in addition to significant public realm improvements and increased secure cycle storage. The scheme will showcase the latest high-quality urban design and enhance access to the historic City Walls.

Southampton has no major greenfield sites available on which to create new homes so the extra housing to meet local needs will have to be provided on brownfield sites. Bargate Quarter therefore presents a vital opportunity to help the city in meeting its housing targets in a practical and sustainable way.

Works are expected to start on site in late Q2.

James Burchell, Partner, Tellon Capital said:
We are delighted that this major scheme that responds dynamically to the significant impact of Covid-19, has been approved. Bargate Quarter will deliver much needed homes in a sustainable approach.

Simon Hugill, Partner at Stace LLP commented:
We are so pleased that this scheme has been approved and look forward to our continued involvement in this exciting project moving into the delivery stage.

Stace LLP is providing Project management and Employer’s agent services, overseeing the design & construction stages. Corstorphine & Wright architects, Turleys Planning Consultants, ICIS Design structural engineers, Macgregor Smith landscape architects and Hoare Lea MEP engineers also make up the project team.
