Redevelopment of Leisure Centre Set to Transform Tower Hamlets

Nestled in the borough of Tower Hamlets, St George’s Leisure Centre is undergoing a comprehensive redevelopment of its existing facilities.

The new scheme will deliver a 6,000m² health and wellbeing hub, offering residents access to high-quality leisure amenities, alongside 30 new family-oriented affordable homes, two of which are designed to be wheelchair accessible. The leisure centre and residential components will be delivered in separate phases.

The modern leisure centre will include a 25 metre, six lane swimming pool, a learner pool, a fitness suite, and dedicated studios for group exercise classes such as yoga, HIIT, Zumba and Pilates. New, fully accessible changing facilities will also further enhance the user experience.

The scheme will deliver a new leisure centre, replacing the existing facility, alongside new homes designed to meet the needs of the local community and provide much-needed public amenities for the borough. The proposals also incorporate external cycle parking and improvements to the surrounding public realm, including upgrades to St George in the East Church Gardens, new play facilities, and the restoration of a former mortuary building to provide additional community space.

Stace provided precontract advice on options and feasibility appraisal, along with cost planning and tendering for the scheme. The project introduces significant constraints, including its position on a Central London red route, which demands proactive logistical management. Its proximity to a Grade I listed church, combined with the presence of numerous boundary headstones, further requires careful coordination and mitigation measures throughout the construction process.

The project is targeting a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating, with construction expected to commence on site between late 2026 and early 2027.
