On 10 September 2026, we celebrated the completion of the steeple rebuild at St Clement Danes Church alongside our fellow project partners, marking a major milestone in a restoration programme that has spanned more than two years.
St Clement Danes has stood on the Strand for over 300 years. During the Blitz, the church suffered a direct incendiary hit in 1941, causing significant fire damage to the steeple and its Portland stone.
Following years of deterioration and five years of fundraising by the Royal Air Force, restoration of the steeple began in 2024, with the structure carefully dismantled stone by stone.
The topping out ceremony brought together the wider design team and representatives from the Royal Air Force to mark the milestone, including the unveiling of the regilded weathervane and a blessing at the top of the steeple.
As the central church of the RAF and a working church in daily use, the restoration will help preserve St Clement Danes and its heritage for future generations.
