Designed by Sir Basil Spence, Coventry Cathedral was completed in 1962 as a replacement for the original Cathedral which was raised to ruin during the blitz.
The original Grade I listed ruins remain a derelict attraction with only the main tower still intact.
Stace has been involved in a number of projects supporting the continued modernisation and maintenance of this landmark building.
Redevelopment and extension to meet the demands of a modern congregation
Having been awarded City of Culture in 2021, there was an expectation for an increase in visitors, which brought to the fore a need to make improvements to better accommodate them.
This project resolved access issues at the liturgical east end of the Cathedral and saw the addition of teaching rooms, a passenger lift and step-free access to the south of the precinct.
New and accessible WC facilities were provided, essential storage and back of house facilities to support events, with direct access from the Cathedral Floor level. The new works complimented the existing Cathedral building, providing a sensitive transition between old and new.
Chapel of Unity
Stace provided cost management services on the Grade I listed Chapel of Unity. At almost 60 years old, the building fabric had started to fail, and multiple improvements were required to provide better facilities for visitors and users.
Stace also provided post-contract services comprising cost reporting, change control, legal considerations for the post-contract contractor designed portion fixing works and completing the final account.
Further to our success on this scheme, Stace was appointed to deliver a new temporary pavilion above the site of the Cathedral Refectory and Song School.
