Creating a new department with no extra space

Like many NHS hospitals, University Hospital Lewisham has grown piecemeal and has become a complex labyrinth where not all the space is fit for purpose.

Stace was asked to support in the creation of a new Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) to sit alongside the paediatric and adult emergency departments.

Stace deployed a multidisciplinary team to work together on different but complementary areas: space planning, project management, health and safety advisory, and cost control. To support designing a practical, deliverable, and cost-efficient solution.

The final designs created space for the new UTC, whilst reducing the flow of people through other emergency departments. A reconfiguration of the space, swapping the pharmacy area with waiting areas, created an improved space for patients.

More staff facilities could also be accommodated with the conversion of a bin store into a changing room.

The final solution required many adjustments and compromises, but the team worked with all key stakeholders throughout the consultation to ensure the final plans were workable for all parties.
