The project comprised new build work/live residential art studios with a new reception block to provide facilities for school children of varying ages and reasonable priced studios for all types of artists from all over the world. The design evolved over a four year period, due to the time taken to raise sufficient funding, with a strong emphasis on sustainable energy and efficiency. The overall scheme was designed around the principles of: maximum use of large north facing glazing panels and light-well, solar shading, natural ventilation with discreet openings in timber louvre panels, timber from sustainable sources, thermal mass within structure of main studio block and bio-mass boiler and district heating system. Funding from the Arts Council of England and through the lottery initiative enabled Phase 1 to be constructed.
