Background

Construction of a 6,500 ft² digital learning and development centre for a leading independent school.

Our Role

Stace provided Cost Management and Employer’s Agent services.

Our Impact

The challenge of this project was to design an attractive contemporary building which would achieve planning consent whilst remaining economical to build.

As the design and cost plan evolved, key factors included the palette of external materials, the size and shape of the building, the internal finishes and the services strategy. The two-storey building was constructed using a steel frame and precast concrete floors with handmade off-white facing bricks imported from Denmark.

The resulting building now offers a flexible meeting space on the ground floor, state of the art IT facilities and library space on the first floor, and a dance studio/ function room on the second floor. The studio used large sections of glazing to allow views across the cricket pitch and nearby Epping Forest. The school also required an extension to their prep school to house additional classrooms and offices.

The project was delivered in time for the new school year and special launch event, planned by project’s primary benefactor.

The innovation centre was shortlisted for the ‘Education’ category of the NLA awards 2015, the ‘Project of the Year’ category for the British Construction Industry Awards 2015 and the RIBA Awards 2015.
