The brief was for a new stand-alone building to be used as an IT/ library suite with open plan group learning spaces and function room with roof terrace overlooking the cricket pitch. The school also required an extension to their prep school to house classrooms and offices in a building that was being demolished to make way for the new building.

A benefactor of the school contributed a substantial proportion of the project funding. His brief was that it must be a stand-alone building and it must be a fantastic piece of design.

The challenge was therefore to design an attractive contemporary building that would achieve planning consent and also be economical to build. As the design and cost plan evolved, some key factors that were addressed included the palette of external materials, the size and shape of the building, the internal finishes and the services strategy. These were all optimised to maintain the desired feel of the building and maintain comfort with the budget.
