Rupam Patel
Monitoring Surveyor

Coming from a law background, I really enjoy the contracts side of being a Monitor Surveyor. (I studied law at the Southbank University, worked for a number law firms dealing in property and am currently doing a Masters, specialising in commercial property and real estate law.)

On a daily basis, I’ll be analysing site inspections, asbestos reports, commercial contracts, etc. I pick apart the information I’m given and see what could be considered a risk. I’ll then produce a risk assessment report for the client and, when the client enters into the agreement, I’ll do site visits and make sure all the legal agreements are in place.

At the moment I’m working on a residential project in Bedford and the development of the Manchester Stock Exchange into a leisure destination. So there’s a wide scope of issues that crop up.

Coming from a non construction background, it can sometimes be hard to grasp the technical aspects of the business. But that’s the beauty of working with Stace. If I’ve got any questions, there are always people there to answer. The real eye openers for me have been learning fund monitoring and reading drawings. When I started, I didn’t even understand drawings!

The scheme, which is being delivered by Tellon Capital, will see the delivery of a new student accommodation scheme at the heart of Sheffield City Centre.

I really like the guidance I get. Everyone is so approachable; you’re never made to feel you’ve asked a stupid question. It’s like a big family. The partners are approachable and they help push me out of my comfort zone. I love the challenge and I like achieving things.

By the end of the programme, I hope to have a better understanding of the technical side of construction, particularly party walls. For me, the legal side is the easy part.

I’d recommend the Stace Graduate Scheme to anyone interested in the construction business – even if construction isn’t their background. There’s a lot to learn but it’s all achievable.

And socially, Stace is a great place to work. As well as the Christmas party and the summer ball, there are seasonal workshops when everyone gets together from all the teams and you learn more about other facets of the business. But even on a daily basis, it’s a very sociable environment. We often have lunch and meetings in the pub. I’m very happy here.
