Eleanor Flavell
Project Manager

How did you find the Stace GDS scheme?

I was already familiar with the construction industry from working at Stace in the business support team. However, heading out into the world of clients and consultants was a new venture.

I found the soft skills sessions in the GDS the most effective for when building professional relationships. Collaborating with wider project delivery teams, all of whom have different working styles, requires excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Do you have any advice for students who are exploring their options and maybe considering the Stace GDS?

The GDS at Stace is an invaluable process to bring your knowledge from university into the world of construction. The scheme provided me with support through my ongoing APC studies and provided me with real-world context to apply the technical knowledge I was developing through my master’s degree to the projects I am working on.

What do you enjoy most about working for Stace?

The variety of projects you are able to get involved in keeps everything interesting. I am currently working with two nationwide developers and an independent school, which provide completely different challenges and opportunities.

My first involvement in managing a project and meeting with the client was for a proposed student development scheme in Bath. Although the scheme did not proceed this then led to a continued pipeline of projects with the client.

My involvement continued and Stace is now delivering a 378-bed student accommodation scheme in the Midlands for the client. I was surprised to find myself able to take on real responsibility and lead on client projects, and that is down to the confidence developed and encouraged by my mentors.

What are your future career plans?

While on the Stace GDS, Stace sponsored me through my master’s in Construction Management. I completed the GDS in the summer of 2019, and I now turn my attention to achieving my RICS chartership for Project Management in 2020, with the continued support of my mentor.

The GDS at Stace is an invaluable process to bring your knowledge from university into the world of construction.
