BBC Reporter visits Stace project UNITE's Sky Plaza, Leeds

01 February 2009

On 27 January 2009 BBC Reporter, Spencer Stokes visited a Stace LLP project, UNITE’s Sky Plaza, to do a report about this student accommodation project in Leeds. The programme aired on the 29 January on the BBC’s Look North news programme which showed the reporter interviewing Simon Jones, UNITE’s Operations Director for the North East region, on the roof at the top of the 37 storey tower! The views from the roof are spectacular, after giving yourself a moment to get over the vertigo, you can enjoy the breathtaking 360 degree panoramic view of Leeds City centre and beyond. The accommodation has a real contemporary apartment feel, all the rooms are in clusters with a shared kitchen dining area but each with its own bathroom and all areas are fitted out to a very high specification, you can really imagine students enjoying their time here. When returning to ground level you start to appreciate what is enticing so many students to live here, you get a real sense of a student community and begin to imagine how inviting it will be when finished. Leaving the Plaza can start to make you regret not being a student!

Stace LLP are acting as Employers Agent and Quantity Surveyor for the £30 million  (circa) Plaza Phase 2 Project in Leeds, for the UNITE Group plc, which is progressing well with the 100 metre high structure, making a dramatic impact on the city centre skyline. Phase 1, also a Stace LLP project, which is now completed, is a separate 15 storey tower providing 964 bedrooms. The Phase 2 tower was subject to a complete redesign of the original approved 26 storey scheme. A new planning application for the revised design was approved increasing the tower to a height of 37 storeys, with a completely new profile and an interesting cladding scheme which is a dark ‘graphite’ finish to the north facade and light ‘silver grey’ to the south. The reinforced concrete core of this 37 storey building, which will be the highest in Leeds, was completed with around 3000 cubic metres of concrete and 400 tonnes of reinforcement. Sky Plaza launches a brand new concept in student living, with 37 floors of luxury. When complete, Sky Plaza will be the highest point in Leeds.
