Update on the Sock Factory...

29 April 2013

Work is well underway to convert an old Sock Factory in Leicester into student accommodation in time for 2013 intake.

The works include conversion and extension of existing sock factory buildings to form 34 residential flats to accommodate 173 bedrooms for students and keyworker occupation, including the construction of cycle and bin stores, and associated landscaping. The works also include the demolition of a late addition single story extension of the original factory.

The flats are arranged to minimise the impact on the internal structure and external appearance of the buildings and therefore vary to fit within the existing plan depth and window configuration. Most flats have 5 bedrooms.

The property will serve students from both the University of Leicester and De Montfort University. Their combined student population is over 40,000 students. Both universities and their students have a very positive impact on the local economy and the cultural and social vitality of the city, hence the importance of this project.

The building appears on the list of Buildings of Local interest, and the City Council is keen to protect these buildings and encourage schemes that retain and improve these buildings.
