Site success as the City of Westminster College opens
Stace are pleased to report that the City of Westminster College recently moved into their decant space after a four month, £3.5 million refurbishment, transforming the old school building at North Wharf Road, into a fully operating space able to accommodate the students and staff for the next two and a half years.
Stace provided Quantity Surveying and Employers Agent services, alongside Knight Frank as Project Manager, Duo Architects and dedicated input from David Pigden and Robin Pellet at the College.
The programme was achieved using a JCT Design and Build contract which allowed the team to liaise with the contractor and the designers on an almost hand-to-mouth basis as the challenges of the existing building unfolded. It was felt that a traditional contract would be too slow and cumbersome as there was not sufficient time to react to site issues, develop the design and execute the works if we were to achieve the desired open date of January 2008.
The Stace team met the challenges of the programme and together with the contractor, Vector Build Ltd, received a warm acknowledgement from the Project Manager:
“It is a great achievement to have completed the refurbishment of the site and construction of the two new blocks in such a short period. Its testament to everyone’s hard work that the college has opened for business.”
Next stop; demolition of the old 1960s building.
